On June 25th, members of our Juvenile Justice Academy attended a lecture given by Robert Schwartz, executive director of Juvenile Law Center.
The Juvenile Law Center serves as a national advocate for children’s rights, enforcing and promoting the rights and well-being of children who come into contact with the justice, child welfare and other public systems all across the country. The lecture focused on the Supreme Court’s line of cases that recognizes the developmental differences of youth.
The program was particularly inspiring, since the timing of the presentation directly coincided with the announcement of the landmark Supreme Court decision prohibiting mandatory sentences of life without parole for minors convicted of murder. We were indeed fortunate to share Mr. Schwartz’s incisive comments on this historic opinion as it was handed down.
