NYCJJ Speaks Before Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims

Posted: May 24th, 2012 | by Yuval Sheer

On May 17th, the Center addressed the Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims. This group is comprised of representatives from Victim Assistance Programs throughout New York State, who meet to discuss issues facing crime victims.

We listened carefully to the coalition’s perspectives on the Raise the Age initiative, and informed them how raising the age of criminal responsibility will provide victims with an opportunity to be involved in ensuring a proper response to youth crime. We explained this specifically in the context of the probation department adjustment services, which would include 16- and 17-year-olds if the age of criminal responsiblity in New York were raised to 18.

The Center wishes to thank Susan Xenarios, Executive Director of the Crime Victims Treatment Center and Ashley Cannon, Director of Public Policy at the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City for their efforts in coordinating this enlightening meeting.
