Judge Corriero’s Letter to the New York Times’ Editor

Posted: March 24th, 2014 | by Yuval Sheer

On March 23, 2014, a letter to the editor, written by Judge Corriero, was published in the New York Times. We would like to share this letter with you:

To the Editor:

In the context of “Rikers Island Struggles With a Rise in Violence” (front page, March 19), it is important to note that New York law, which sets the age of criminal responsibility at 16, permits holding youth as young as 16 at Rikers Island, exposing this vulnerable group to the many dangers highlighted in the article.

It is high time to remove all minors from adult facilities in New York State, and to raise the age of criminal responsibility.

MICHAEL A. CORRIERO
New York, March 19, 2014#
The writer, executive director of the New York Center for Juvenile Justice, was a judge for 28 years in the criminal courts of New York State.
